3 Common Skin Care Misconceptions

The cosmetics industry is great at recycling marketing techniques and encouraging people to buy far more beauty products than they actually need. This is especially true for skin care products. There are such a wide variety of brands, colors and packaging that it seems like each product is totally unique. Unfortunately, most of these products have little scientific backing and rely primarily on advertising language for sales. Three common skin care myths are examined below:

#1 Different cleansers are better for different types of skin

Unfortunately skin cleaners provide no real lasting benefit. They are only applied to the surface of your skin and then washed off shortly after. Despite what sales gimmicks suggest, the texture of a product has no bearing on its performance. As long as it has a balanced pH, any cleanser is effective on any part of your skin.

#2 Certain products are better for different ages of skin

“Companies often try to market their products based on an age demographic, spouting dubious claims about what a young person’s skin needs versus the needs of someone older,” said Kristie Friedrichs of Wayzata Medical Spa & Botox Center. “However, this view is skewed. It is just as likely for a 20 year old to have dry, damaged skin, as for a 60 year old to have great, healthy skin. When looking for products, pay attention to your individual skin care needs, rather than any demographic branding on the packaging.”

#3 Eye cream

Despite what many companies tell you, there is no difference between eye cream, neck cream or face cream. From a topical cosmetic perspective, they are all the same composition. Using a well-balanced, quality moisturizer on all parts of your face will be just as effective as using each of these “highly” specialized creams. The only thing you need to be concerned about is the type of skin your have, not where on your body it happens to be.
